National Mujahid Day, commemorating the double anniversary of the North Constantine Offensives and the convening of the Soummam Congress (20 August 1955–1956 / 2026)

Message of the President of the Republic, Mr. Abdelmadjid Tebboune, on the occasion of National Mujahid Day, commemorating the double anniversary of the North Constantine Offensives and the convening of the Soummam Congress (20 August 1955–1956 / 2026)

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful, and may prayers and peace be upon the noblest of Messengers,

Distinguished Algerian women,

Distinguished Algerian citizens,

The Algerian people today commemorate National Mujahid Day, marking the double anniversary of the North Constantine Offensives and the convening of the Soummam Congress, in remembrance of the achievements of those men, the Mujahideen who fell as martyrs, as well as those who remain faithful to their commitment. May Almighty Allah grant them health and longevity. They fought and persevered until victory was achieved, fulfilling their duty and receiving the fulfilment of Allah’s promise, for He is the best of supporters.

This commemoration embodies the profound lessons of ingenuity that inspired the exceptional generation of November to preserve the flame of the Revolution whose spark it had ignited, to accompany its development, expansion and outreach within the framework of the objectives set out in the 1 November Declaration, and to confront the strategic plans of the colonial authorities, who clung to the illusion of keeping Algeria under the yoke of occupation and maintaining their control over it, resorting to every possible means to prevent the Algerian people from aspiring to live in freedom and independence.

The North Constantine Offensives, led by the martyr and symbol of the Revolution, Zighoud Youcef, were and shall remain, through their strength, heroism, scope and determination, a powerful embodiment of the noblest values under the banner of the National Liberation Front and the National Liberation Army. They also constitute a source of great historical lessons, serving as a guiding light for the present and the future; lessons for all, near and far, demonstrating that Algeria has always been, and will remain, firmly attached to the bonds of cohesion, solidarity and national unity with which Almighty Allah has blessed it.

National Mujahid Day is also closely associated with the anniversary of the convening of the Soummam Congress, that historic congress which envisioned an integrated project for organizing and managing the Revolution in its military, logistical and organizational dimensions, as well as in its legislative dimension, through the establishment of institutions reflecting the substance of the Revolution in various fields, particularly the military, political and media spheres, while promoting its cause in international forums. This historic congress thus provided a framework for the revolutionary project in all its dimensions, enabling it to confront the most formidable colonial power of the time, backed by the Atlantic Alliance.

Distinguished Algerian women,

Distinguished Algerian citizens,

If 20 August 1955 embodied a strategy aimed at confronting the enemy forces on the battlefield, 20 August 1956 represented a qualitative turning point that gave shape to a multidimensional strategy and established a new balance between the parties to the conflict, in terms of planning and organization. The National Liberation Revolution thus became the force that transformed the equation of traditional colonialism, not only in Algeria, but also for all oppressed peoples across the world.

Such pivotal historical milestones, while reminding us of the symbolism of the Mujahid and the distinguished place he occupies in the collective consciousness of the Nation, also allow us to proudly reflect upon the victorious Algeria of today — an Algeria committed to safeguarding its national sovereignty and strengthening the foundations of a strong State, supported by its institutions, the awareness of its youth and the cohesion of its people. Thus, the message of the martyrs and Mujahideen remains alive, radiating generosity and selflessness, and continues to propel our country towards greater heights, prosperity and leadership.

Finally, on this enduring occasion, I call upon the younger generation of today to carry forward the mission entrusted to us by our fathers and forefathers, to draw lessons from their immense sacrifices, and to build upon them by continuing our efforts to advance the Homeland and fulfil the aspirations of the glorious November generation.

I pay tribute to the memory of our noble martyrs and extend my respectful and grateful salutations to my sisters, the Mujahidate, and my brothers, the Mujahideen, on their National Day, wishing them continued good health and full well-being.

“Long Live Algeria!”

Glory and Eternity to Our Noble Martyrs.

May the peace, mercy and blessings of Almighty Allah be upon you.
