Algerian and Nigerian Foreign Ministers Reaffirm Strengthening Bilateral Cooperation and Expanding Partnership

On the sidelines of his participation in the meetings of the Executive Council of the African Union, held in Addis Ababa, the Minister of State, Minister of Foreign Affairs, National Community Abroad and African Affairs, Mr. Ahmed Attaf, held bilateral talks with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the sister Federal Republic of Nigeria, Mr. Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, within the framework of regular consultation between the two countries on matters of common interest at both the regional and continental levels.

The meeting provided an opportunity to exchange analyses and perspectives on the current situation in the Sahel-Saharan region, which faces both security and development challenges. The two Ministers emphasized the importance of adopting a comprehensive and balanced approach that reconciles security requirements with development needs, highlighting the central role Algeria and Nigeria can play, given their regional weight and strategic position, in supporting stability and promoting regional cooperation.

They also discussed prospects for joint efforts to enhance economic development in the Sahel region, particularly through the implementation of structural and integrative projects that can strengthen regional connectivity and foster economic integration among states, serving the aspirations of local populations for prosperity and well-being.

On the bilateral level, the Ministers reviewed the state of Algerian-Nigerian relations, which are marked by historical depth and strategic significance, and reaffirmed their shared commitment to giving them renewed momentum, whether through increased high-level exchanges or through activating and expanding existing cooperation mechanisms into new priority areas. They also stressed the importance of continued coordination between the two countries within the organs of the African Union and in various international fora, in support of peace and development across the African continent.
