The President of the Republic, Mr. Abdelmadjid Tebboune, received the letters of credence of the Ambassador of the (Vatican) accredited to the People’s Democratic Republic of Algeria.

Diplomatic relations between the People’s Democratic Republic of Algeria and the Holy See are rooted in a longstanding tradition of mutual respect, interreligious dialogue, and moral and humanitarian cooperation.
Following Algeria’s independence in 1962, official contacts with the Vatican were gradually established. Formal diplomatic relations were established in 1972, reflecting the shared will to promote peace, religious coexistence, and understanding among peoples.
Since then, bilateral relations have developed in a climate of trust, notably based on respect for freedom of worship as guaranteed by the Algerian Constitution, and the promotion of interreligious dialogue, particularly between Islam and Christianity.
Today, Algeria and the Holy See continue their cooperation around shared values such as peace, justice, solidarity, respect for cultures, and peaceful coexistence.
