Diplomatic relations between the People’s Democratic Republic of Algeria and the Kingdom of Spain are based on a historical, cultural, and economic framework of proximity and interaction. The shared geography of the Mediterranean and historical exchanges have fostered close ties between the two peoples for centuries, particularly through trade and cultural exchanges.

Following Algeria’s independence in 1962, the two countries quickly established official diplomatic relations, marking the beginning of a partnership based on political, economic, and social cooperation. Spain was among the first European countries to maintain sustained dialogue with independent Algeria.

Since then, bilateral relations have been strengthened through numerous cooperation agreements covering areas such as trade, energy, education, culture, and migration. The two countries also maintain close coordination within regional and international organizations and continue regular political dialogue to promote stability and prosperity in the Mediterranean region.

Today, Algeria and Spain continue their strategic partnership, founded on mutual respect, economic and trade cooperation, and the promotion of peace and sustainable development in the Mediterranean region.
